Should my first digital product be free?

Free tells you less than you think
Usually no. Charge for your first product. Free downloads feel like proof but tell you very little, because people take free things they never open. Only money tells you somebody valued the work. Free works best as a small sample of a paid product, or as a way to collect emails.
Hundreds of downloads and no buyers is a common and misleading result.
When free is right
As a small sample that leads to a paid product. As a way to collect emails. As a first chapter or a single template from a pack.
Small, genuinely useful, and obviously part of something bigger.
When it is a mistake
Giving away the whole thing to "build an audience". You end up with an audience that expects free things.
It is also a comfortable way to avoid asking for money, which is the skill you actually need.
A better first move
Charge a real price and sell to ten people. You will learn more from those ten than from a thousand downloads.
You can always give it away later. You cannot easily start charging for something people got free.
