How do I sell stock photos?
Updated
How it works
Selling stock photos means uploading to an agency, where buyers licence your images and you take a share of each fee. It is a volume business: a large, carefully keyworded library built over years, not a handful of good shots. Photos that fill a gap in a designer’s layout sell. Sunsets do not.
The same photo can be licensed thousands of times, which is the appeal, or twice, which is the reality for most.
What actually sells
Photos that fill a gap in a designer’s layout: people working, real hands, empty backgrounds with space for text, specific industries.
Sunsets and latte art are hopelessly oversupplied. Search the agency for your idea before you shoot it.
Keywords are half the job
A photo nobody can find earns nothing. Keyword every upload carefully and honestly.
Look at how the top results for your subject are tagged and match their vocabulary.
Be realistic about the numbers
Expect a long build with very small early returns. It rewards volume, consistency and patience.
If you want money this quarter, selling a preset pack or a photo pack direct will get there faster.
