What should I look for in a platform to sell digital products?
Updated
The cost shape, not the headline rate
Check four things: the cost shape in a month with no sales and in your best month, who is merchant of record for sales tax, whether you can export your buyers and leave, and how the file actually reaches the buyer. Those four decide everything a comparison table skips.
Watch for stacked costs: platform cut, processing, app fees, payout fees.
Tax responsibility
Find out in writing whether the platform is the merchant of record. If it is, it deals with digital sales tax in the buyer’s country. If not, that is your job.
This is the single most expensive thing to get wrong and the least discussed.
Your data and your exit
Can you export buyer emails? Can you download your files? What happens to active subscriptions if you leave?
A platform that makes leaving hard will not get better once you are stuck.
Delivery and support
How does the file reach the buyer, and what happens when the email lands in spam? Is there a page they can get back to?
Most support tickets you will ever receive are about this. Check it before you launch, not after.
