What being a merchant of record means
When you sell digital items online, sales tax can get tricky fast. Every state and country has its own tax laws. A normal payment tool just processes the card. That leaves you to collect and send the taxes yourself. That can be a lot of paperwork for a small team or solo creator.
Lemon Squeezy works as the merchant of record instead. It sells your product to the customer for you. That means Lemon Squeezy calculates the right sales tax and VAT, collects the money, and sends it to local tax offices. You do not have to register for taxes in dozens of countries.
Stripe ownership and what changed in 2026
Stripe bought Lemon Squeezy in July 2024. Even after the buyout, Lemon Squeezy kept running as its own platform. If you sign up or log in, the tool still works as a standalone service in 2026.
In February 2026, Stripe announced a new product called Stripe Managed Payments. This is Stripe's own merchant of record system. The Lemon Squeezy team is building this new product for Stripe, bringing their tax and checkout tools directly into the Stripe system.
How fees work on Lemon Squeezy
Lemon Squeezy does not charge a monthly subscription to use the tool. Instead, it takes a fee out of each sale you make. Their fee includes a cut of the sale plus a fixed charge per transaction. You should check their pricing page for current numbers.
There are also extra fees for certain payments. You pay a bit more if a customer buys from another country, uses PayPal, or signs up for a recurring subscription. These extra costs cover the higher fees from banks and payment networks.
Other ways to sell digital files
Lemon Squeezy is built mainly for digital downloads and software. But it is not the only way to sell files online. Some creators use regular payment tools like Stripe directly, though that means handling your own taxes and building your own file delivery.
