What is a digital download?
Updated
A file, delivered instantly
A digital download is any file the buyer receives immediately after paying: a PDF, a ZIP, an image pack, an audio file, a spreadsheet. The store confirms the payment, then gives them a link. It lands on their device and stays there. Nothing is posted and nothing expires.
That is the whole idea, and it is why downloads are the simplest kind of digital product to run.
Download versus access
A download is a file they keep. Access is a login to something you host — a course, a community, a tool.
Downloads are simpler for you to run. Access is easier to keep updated and harder to share around.
How delivery actually works
The store confirms the payment, then emails the buyer a link. The link is usually personal and expires after a while.
You never send anything by hand. If you are emailing files yourself, your store is set up wrong.
What goes wrong
Most complaints are the email landing in spam, or the buyer typing the wrong address at checkout.
Make sure there is also a download page they can reach after paying, not just an email.
