What file format should I sell my digital product in?
Updated
The rule
Sell in the format your buyer can open with the fewest steps. PDF is the safe default for anything read, a Word or Google Docs copy for anything edited, PNG plus the source file for images, and SVG for cutting files. When unsure, include two formats.
Every extra step for the buyer is a support message and a refund risk. A second export costs you minutes.
Safe defaults
Written material: PDF, plus ePub if people will read it on a phone. Documents to edit: a Word file and a Google Docs copy.
Spreadsheets: Excel plus a Google Sheets copy. Images: PNG plus the source file. Cutting files: SVG plus DXF and PNG.
When to zip
Bundle several files into a ZIP so the buyer gets one download instead of eight.
Name the files inside clearly. "final_v3_NEW.pdf" tells the buyer nothing.
Test on a phone
Many buyers open the file on a phone first. ZIPs are awkward there and some formats will not open at all.
If your product is phone-first, deliver a plain PDF as well as the bundle.
