Etsy vs Shopify:
Marketplace or Your Own Store?

Etsy fits sellers who want to list their work in a marketplace where shoppers already browse. Shopify fits sellers who want a branded store with more control over pages, apps, and sales channels. For digital products, compare delivery as well as discovery: Etsy has digital listings, while Shopify uses a delivery app.

Who each tool is best for

Choose around your buyers.

Etsy

When Etsy fits

Choose Etsy if you make original downloads or other eligible goods and want to test them in a shared marketplace. Spend time on clear listing images and useful search terms. Existing shoppers are a reason to try Etsy, but a listing alone does not promise views or sales.

Shopify

When Shopify fits

Choose Shopify if your catalog, brand, and repeat buyers need a dedicated home. It suits a shop that mixes files with shipped goods or sells through several channels. Set aside time to choose apps and bring visitors to your store; the site itself is only one part of the work.

When to stay put

When Whop or a file store is the wrong fit.

Do not choose Whop to replace a retail store just because your catalog includes a PDF. A community file store does not replace shipping, inventory, or the way Etsy shoppers find listings. Keep the main shop where it serves your buyers, and use a community only if you have a clear reason to run one.

How to switch

Move the offer. Keep buyer access clear.

Use this as a migration checklist. Confirm what each provider can transfer before canceling the old service.

  • Keep your original product files, listing text, photos, and permitted order exports. Separate downloads from goods you still need to ship.
  • Rebuild a small sample of the catalog. On Shopify, configure the delivery app; on Etsy, check digital listing rules and supported file formats.
  • Keep old order records and honor past download access. Explain where existing buyers should ask for help after the move.
  • Test a digital purchase and a shipped order if you sell both. Update links you control only after the new buyer path works.

For a Whop community

A store for files inside your community.

MKKT is useful when you already run a Whop community and want to sell a separate file to its members. It can give a workbook or template a home beside the group. Choose your retail store first; a community file store serves a narrower need.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight.

Is Shopify or Etsy better for digital products?
Etsy fits original downloads in a marketplace. Shopify fits a branded store with more control over pages and apps. Both can deliver files; compare how you will attract buyers and support them after purchase.
Who is Etsy's biggest competitor?
Shopify is a useful comparison when you want your own store, but it serves a different role from a marketplace. The relevant alternative depends on your product and where buyers look for it.
Why are sellers leaving Etsy?
Some sellers may want different costs, more store control, or a new way to reach buyers. That does not prove a broad trend. Compare your own results and workload before moving a working shop.
What is the downside of selling on Etsy?
You build within Etsy's marketplace rules and listing format. Digital listings also have file limits and do not offer variations. Check those constraints against your product before you invest time in a large catalog.
