Whop vs Stripe: do I need both?

Updated

They are not the same kind of thing

Stripe and Whop are not competitors. Stripe is a payment processor: it takes a card number and moves money to a bank account, with no product page, no access control and no file delivery. Whop is a selling platform with all of those, and it uses a processor underneath. You rarely choose between them.

The real choice is whether you build the selling part yourself on top of a processor, or take a platform that already has it.

When Stripe alone makes sense

If you have a developer and you want to build exactly what you want, Stripe plus your own site gives you complete control.

You are then responsible for the checkout page, the receipts, the failed payments, the access logic and the tax handling. That is a lot of work to own.

When a platform makes sense

If you want to sell this week, a platform does all of the above already. You accept its rules and its cut in exchange for not building any of it.

Most people selling a course, a community or a file should take the platform. Build it yourself only when the platform is genuinely in your way.

Do you need a Stripe account?

Usually not. Platforms often hold the processor relationship for you, so you connect a bank account instead.

Check what the platform asks for during setup. Either way you will have to pass an identity check before money moves.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight.

When is raw Stripe the better choice?
When you already have a site, someone who can build, and a reason to own the checkout. Stripe moves money. It gives you no product page, no access control and no file delivery.
Can I use Stripe and Whop together?
Not as a stack you control. Whop takes the payment itself and pays you from a balance. If you want the processor in your own name, you need your own site instead.
Does Elon Musk own part of Stripe?
No. He was one of many early angel investors when Stripe started, but the company is controlled by its founders, the Collison brothers, together with its institutional investors.
Why are Stripe fees so high?
Most of a card fee is not the processor. Card networks and the buyer’s bank take the bulk of it, and fraud cover and refunds sit on top. Stripe publishes its own share on its pricing page.
What are the disadvantages of using Stripe?
On its own it gives you no storefront, no access control, no file delivery and no tax handling. You build all of it, and you carry the disputes and the compliance yourself.
Who handles sales tax?
Some platforms act as merchant of record and deal with it. Stripe alone does not, so you would be responsible. Ask this before you pick either route.
