What fees do platforms charge to sell digital products?
Updated
Four kinds of fee
Selling a digital product can cost you four separate fees: a platform cut taken from each sale, a card processing fee taken by the payment network, a monthly subscription on some platforms, and extras for payouts, currency conversion or add-on apps. To know what you keep, subtract all four, not just the first.
Comparison articles usually mention only the platform cut. The other three are where the money quietly goes.
Processing is unavoidable
Every card payment costs something, everywhere, on every platform. Nobody absorbs it.
It is normally a percentage plus a small fixed amount, which is why very cheap products lose a large share to fees.
Work out your own number
Take your price. Subtract the platform cut, then the processing fee, then a share of any monthly subscription.
Do it for your best month and your worst month. The worst month is where flat monthly fees hurt.
Do not chase the lowest rate
The gap between platforms is a few percent of your revenue. The gap between selling and not selling is all of it.
Pick a workable option and spend the saved time on the product instead.
