Should I watermark my digital files?
Updated
Watermark previews, not the product
Watermark your previews, not the file the buyer paid for. A visible logo across a paid download makes the product feel cheap, and the buyer paid to be rid of it. The middle ground most sellers use is a small footer carrying the buyer’s email or order number.
Preview images on the product page should be watermarked, so nobody can simply take the sample.
The middle ground
A small footer on each page with the buyer’s email or order number. Quiet, and enough to discourage resharing.
This is what most experienced sellers do, and complaints about it are rare.
When a visible watermark is right
Free samples and lead magnets, where the point is to advertise. And preview versions sent out for review.
Never on the paid file, unless the licence specifically restricts how it may be used.
It is not protection
A watermark can be removed by anybody who wants to. It is a deterrent, not a lock.
Do not let it become the reason your product is worse to use.
