How do I sell 3D print files?
Updated
Sell the file, not the print
Selling 3D print files means the buyer does the printing, the postage and the failed prints, so your only job is a model that prints well on a machine you have never seen. Include the STL, a pre-supported version, tested printer settings and photos of a real print, and state the licence.
It also means the model has to actually print well on a machine you have never seen.
What to include
The STL, plus a pre-supported version if it needs supports, and printer settings that you have tested.
Add photos of a real print. Renders look great and buyers do not trust them.
Set the licence clearly
The key question is whether the buyer may sell prints they make. Personal use only, or a commercial licence at a higher price.
Say it on the product page. It is the most common pre-purchase question in this market.
Where the buyers are
Dedicated model marketplaces have browsing printers. A storefront or a membership keeps more of the money.
Many designers run a monthly membership: a few new models each month for a fixed fee. It suits this market well.
