How do you sell a digital product on Shopify?

You can sell a digital product on Shopify, but it does not work out of the box. You must install a file delivery app to send files to your customers. After you add your file and set your price, buyers get a download link by email after they pay.

First, create a product in your dashboard. Give it a title, a description, and an image. Uncheck the box that says the item needs shipping. This tells the store not to ask for a shipping address at checkout.

Next, install a file delivery app from the app store. Open the app and attach your digital file to the product. When a customer finishes paying, the app sends them a secure link to download the file.

Selling files on a regular online store comes with extra costs. You pay a monthly fee just to keep your store open. Delivery apps often charge their own monthly subscriptions or take a cut of sales once your file size grows.

Setup can also take time. You have to build pages, connect payment processors, and test email deliveries. If you only have one or two files to sell, setting up a full online storefront can feel like too much work.

Shopify is great if you already run a large brand. It works well if you sell physical clothes or gear and want to add digital downloads to the same cart. You get full control over your web design and domain name.

It also fits sellers with huge catalogs. If you sell dozens of items and need complex inventory tools, paying the monthly platform fee makes sense. But for simple file sales, it is often more power than you need.
