Gumroad vs Sellfy: which one
should you actually use?
Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 of every direct sale and costs nothing per month. Sellfy takes nothing per sale but bills from $29 a month. At a $49 average order the two swap places at about $263 a month in sales. Under that line Gumroad is cheaper, over it Sellfy is.
The short answer
Gumroad if you are starting. Sellfy if you are selling.
Pick Gumroad if you sell under about $263 a month
Gumroad has no monthly bill, so a quiet month costs nothing. Below roughly $263 in monthly sales(about six $49 orders) its 10% + $0.50 cut comes to less than Sellfy’s cheapest plan. That makes it the right call for a first product, a seasonal one, or anything with irregular demand.
It is also the easier tax answer. Gumroad is the merchant of record, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT for you, and its Discover marketplace can put your product in front of buyers you did not bring, at a 30% cut on those sales.
Pick Sellfy if you sell steadily above that line
Once sales are consistent, a 0% platform fee compounds. Past roughly $263 a monththe $29 plan is already cheaper than Gumroad’s per-sale cut, and the gap widens with every order: at $2,000 a month you would hand Gumroad about $220 and Sellfy $29.
You also get a real store builder with a custom domain, and money arrives directly in your own Stripe or PayPal instead of waiting in a platform balance. If you sell print-on-demand merch, subscriptions, or video alongside downloads, Sellfy covers those and Gumroad largely does not.
Pick on tax, not fees, if you sell into the EU
This one can override the arithmetic entirely. Gumroad became a merchant of record in January 2025 and now files your sales tax, VAT, and GST globally. Sellfy will calculate and add EU VAT at checkout, but you remain the merchant of record and you file it yourself.
If registering for VAT in the EU is something you would rather not take on, Gumroad can be worth more than the fee difference. If you already have an accountant and a VAT number, that advantage is worth much less.

marks the platform with the edge on that row. Pricing verified August 2026 on each platform's own pricing and help pages. "You keep" assumes a single $49 digital sale. Neither figure includes card processing, which is charged separately on both and estimated here at 2.9% + $0.30; Gumroad's published fee is explicitly exclusive of processing. Sellfy's figure excludes its monthly plan, which is billed whether or not you sell. Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 applies to direct sales. Sales it sources through Discover are charged at 30%. Sellfy monthly prices shown for annual billing first, then monthly billing. Platforms change pricing, so check their sites for the latest.
The rows split fairly evenly, and they split along one line: Gumroad sells you fewer decisions, Sellfy sells you more control. Gumroad carries the tax burden, has no plan to pick and no volume ceiling. Sellfy takes nothing per sale, pays into your own accounts immediately, and handles product types Gumroad does not, for a bill that arrives every month regardless.
Where each one wins
Each one is genuinely better at something.
Gumroad · cost
Gumroad: nothing to pay before your first sale
There is no plan, no trial clock, and no bill in a month where nothing sells. You can list a product, forget about it for a year, and owe Gumroad nothing, which is why it remains the default for a first digital product.
The trade is that the cut never falls. There is no higher tier that buys a lower rate, so 10% + $0.50 is what you pay at every volume.
Gumroad · tax
Gumroad: it is the merchant of record
Since January 2025 Gumroad has been the seller of record on every transaction, calculating, collecting, and remitting sales tax, VAT, and GST worldwide. For a solo creator selling into dozens of countries, that removes a genuinely difficult compliance problem.
Sellfy will compute EU VAT for you, but the filing stays yours.
Sellfy · margin
Sellfy: the platform stops taking a cut
Sellfy charges 0% on every plan, so beyond the subscription your revenue is yours less processing. At $2,000 a month in sales that is roughly $190 a month you keep that Gumroad would have taken.
The plans are banded by annual volume ($10k, $50k, and $200k) so growing does eventually mean moving up a tier.
Sellfy · the store
Sellfy: a real store, and more than downloads
Sellfy is a store builder rather than a product-hosting page: custom domain, your own branding, and checkout that pays straight into your Stripe or PayPal with no platform balance in between.
It also sells print-on-demand merch, physical goods, subscriptions, and video, a wider catalogue than Gumroad handles, under one storefront.
The honest breakeven
The crossover is about $263 a month.
On a $49 product, Gumroad takes $4.90 plus $0.50, or $5.40 a sale, an effective 11%. Sellfy’s cheapest plan is $29 a month billed yearly, so it overtakes Gumroad at 29 ÷ 5.40, or about five and a half sales, roughly $263 in monthly sales. On monthly billing at $39 the line moves out to about $354.
Below the line Gumroad costs less and never bills you for a quiet month. Above it Sellfy wins on margin, and keeps winning, but you pay the subscription in every slow month too.
Illustrative arithmetic at a $49 average order, using each platform’s published rates as of August 2026. Your own crossover moves with your average order value: cheaper products cross later, because Gumroad’s $0.50 is a larger share of each sale. Nothing here is a promise of sales volume.
A third option
Both assume the product already exists.
Gumroad and Sellfy are both places to sell a finished file. If yours is finished, the choice above is the whole choice. If the thing you know is still in your head (or spread across notes, calls, and documents) the harder problem is not checkout. MKKT is built for that case: its product studio drafts the ebook, course, or template pack itself, plus the sales copy and the product page, from what you describe or upload.
| Platform | You keep on a $49 sale | Per-sale fee | Monthly fee | Builds the product with you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MKKT | $43.85 | 7% flat | $0 | Yes, AI product studio |
| Gumroad | $41.88 | 10% + $0.50 | $0 | No |
| Sellfy | $47.28 | 0% | $29+ | No |
Pricing verified August 2026. "You keep" assumes a single $49 digital sale with card processing estimated at 2.9% + $0.30 and shown separately for all three. Sellfy's figure excludes its monthly plan; MKKT and Gumroad have no monthly plan. Platforms change pricing, so check their sites for the latest.
- 7% per sale, $0 a month, no plan tiers
- Describe what you know and it drafts the product
- One branded storefront holds your whole catalogue
- Files delivered the moment payment clears
The honest limits. MKKT is newer than both, it is not a merchant of record, so unlike Gumroad your tax obligations stay yours, and product files cap at 100 MB, well under what either competitor allows. MKKT sets up your payment account from your email, with no bank details on day one; payments are processed by Whop, and you verify your identity with Whop once before your first withdrawal, so your balance sits with Whop until then. You can start selling immediately, but that verification gates the money coming out.
FAQ
Questions, answered straight.
- Which is cheaper, Gumroad or Sellfy?
- It depends on your volume. Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per direct sale and nothing per month; Sellfy charges nothing per sale but starts at $29 a month billed yearly. At a $49 average order, Gumroad costs less below roughly $263 a month in sales, and Sellfy costs less above that. Card processing is separate on both.
- Can I move my products from Gumroad to Sellfy?
- Yes, though nothing migrates automatically. You download your product files from Gumroad, upload them to Sellfy, and rebuild your product pages and prices there. Existing customers and past purchases do not transfer, so export your Gumroad customer emails first and tell people where the store moved. Then update every link you have already published.
- Does Gumroad or Sellfy handle EU VAT for me?
- Gumroad does. Since January 2025 Gumroad has acted as merchant of record, calculating, collecting, and remitting sales tax and VAT worldwide on your behalf. With Sellfy you stay the merchant of record: Sellfy can calculate and add EU VAT at checkout automatically, but filing and remitting it remains your job. Check both platforms' current terms.
- Is there an alternative to both Gumroad and Sellfy?
- Several, including MKKT. MKKT charges 7% per sale with no monthly plan, so a $49 sale nets about $43.85 after estimated processing, and it drafts the product itself from what you describe. It is newer than both, it is not a merchant of record, and product files cap at 100 MB, so weigh it on what you need built, not only on rate.
