Is Shopify or Etsy better for digital products?
Updated
The short answer
Etsy brings shoppers who are already searching, and charges for them through stacked per-sale fees. Shopify brings nobody: it is a shop you rent monthly, design yourself and drive traffic to, and it needs an app before it can deliver a file at all.
Traffic is the whole question. Everything else is detail.
Choose Etsy when
You have no audience, and your files fit a category shoppers browse — printables, planners, invitations, cut files, clip art — and your designs meet Etsy’s Creativity Standards: your own work, or made under your creative direction, with any AI use disclosed in the listing.
Also when you want to start this afternoon with no monthly commitment.
Choose Shopify when
You already have traffic, you want a branded shop, or you sell physical items alongside your files.
A mixed catalogue is the strongest case for it. One checkout, one dashboard, both kinds of product.
If neither fits
Selling a few files with no physical items and a small audience? A storefront costs nothing until you sell and delivers files without an app.
Shopify earns its monthly cost when you have a catalogue and a brand, not when you have one product.
